9. Media: Creating Images Digital from Paper

We will create our own graffiti from paper and add it to a digital collage.

To do this you will need these resources:

  • 1.  Paper. Printer paper is good and cheap.
  • 2. Pencils, erasers
  • 3. Markers or felt tipped pens.
  • 4. A camera, phone camera, iPad camera or laptop webcam

Part 1: Sketch your ideas

Start with a rough drawing.

Here, I am simply practicing how to draw a G in a different styles with a SINGLE change in each one. Adding a flat edge or a serif (a tick at the end of the letter) or a square shaped lettering.

10 minutes. Simply practice.

Now develop your letter into single style in large form. Here I changed my letter, but the style changes remain. Adding arrow tips and 3D styles to the lettering.

Nothing is wrong or incorrect here, it is practice. I also began using pen.

Now, I used pen, colour and blocked lettering styles. I used one colour and three shades. Middle tone goes on top. Light at the bottom.

I didn't like the block lettering. You may like it, and if you do, then keep it. I chose to use arrows instead at the ends of my lettering.

Here, instead of the block lettering, I used an outline and a colour. I added an accent to the curves with a single line.

I drew it again. Getting better at drawing the letter. This time I added one more thing to the outline - a border to triple the outline. I added dots and accents to the square edges.

Finally, I took the dots, the accents and the colours to another level, by adding splits to the edges, dots and circles to the outside and pushing the outlines into the page with curves. The letter feels a bit 'squashed' so if Iwas to do it again, I would make a grid to make the letter more even.

Part 2: Adding to the subway collage.

Now, use a camera to photograph your artwork

Then share it to your computer so you can cut out the background with the Magic Wand, Lasso Tool, or the Eraser Tool.

I'm in Photopea.com here and used the Magic Wand to cut out the paper background.

Then, in Photopea I exported it as a PNG to add to my collage. In Paint.net you simply SAVE AS... and choose PNG.

Once I had my PNG file, I inserted it onto a new space in our Subway Collage. You can open the collage from here.
