What's New: Student Environmental Committee (SEC) Blog
Students in Year 4, 5 and 7 and 8 have been enjoying learning about how worms can compost our waste food at school as part of this term's ECA in soil and compost. The aim of the ECA is to learn about the vital role healthy soil plays in supporting our food production, and also to learn how to use a lot of the waste we produce as a school to create healthy soil.
Students collected the waste vegetables and fruit that is discarded during lunch preparations which included Morning Glory stems and Guava Peels. Then they prepared worm gardens using plastic bottles that would otherwise have been recycled or thrown away. They put waste coconut dust (the waste from making a coconut product called coir) and cow dung into their bottles to make the worms some bedding and give them a sustained food source. Then they placed a layer of waste vegetables on the top of the habitat , watered it, and finally, covered it with damp newspaper.
On Friday 30th January, Bangkok Patana held its second community Farmer's Market. Over 30 vendors from all over greater Bangkok sold their environmentally friendly, local fare to the Patana community in the afternoon. The Farmer's Market does not only support local businesses, but it also provides healthy and whole foods at reasonable prices. The Student Environmental Committee had our own stall at the Market to promote and provide subsidised water bottles in order to discourage the use of disposable PET plastic bottles as well as one-time use only paper drinking cups. The bottles, priced at 200 baht, are an environmentally friendly, BPA free alternative that keeps students, teachers and parents hydrated.
This year, the year 8's just have completed their L2L Connextions. Where they were separated into 4 islands where they had a choice to choose a specific role like government, design, etc. They were making trades, choices and trying to make their island a better place. When they made their choices the consequences were based on what their choices were. Some consequences were good, some were bad. Scorch,Coal Stone,Midori and Laguna Bay were the names of this year's 4 islands. Midori was focusing on being eco friendly and turned out very stable. Also, had a government laughed at my the UN. They weren't very economically successful first but ended up pretty good. Coal Stone had made wise choices like our government has done and ended with a tragic ending. Their island had blown up due to a secret nuclear testing that had gone wrong by Ràvenhølm. If this was the disaster caused my a nuclear explosion near their volcano, what could happen to us? Scorch, a Coal Stone alliance had a rough start with 50% of their population in jail. Also, had child labour happening at nearly the same time. They rose up to a better, stable and economically powerful island with the help of Coal Stone. Laguna Bay had a very successful start. They had good investments and very eco friendly. Then soon disaster struck by accepting Ràvenhølm's offer. Their coral was destroyed and tourist were littering and ruining the beaches. They ended up economically powerful.
Last Saturday, the 20th of February, Patana held its annual Fun Day. For the second year in a row, the Student Environmental Committee (SEC) had their own stall, along with a group of other CAT clubs. Members of the SEC were at Patana bright and early to set up the stall, set up the game, gather the prizes and prepare for the day ahead. As Fun Day opened to the crowds of people from young and old, more and more people started to visit and play the SEC game, which was throwing a ball into one of three holes from a distance away - sounds very simple but it actually got quite competitive between competitors! In addition to the game, the SEC and our accomplishments and aims were advertised as well. We ended up having tons of people visit our stall and learn something about the environment and us as a group.
