Learning Advice for Parents

Personal, Social and Emotional Development - Understanding Emotions

We have talked already about encouraging your children to talk about how they are feeling. An important next step is to encourage them to think about others around them and respond to how other people are feeling. Your child shows this when they offer comfort when someone close to them is hurt or upset, this could be by giving them a hug or sharing something of theirs to show they care. Praising our children when they do this reinforces that it is a good thing to do and helps them to become more aware of what is happening around them.

Learning Focus

Spots and Dots

Being truly creative means that all creations are unique and different. We teach the skills the children need, for instance exploring colour and how colours can be changed, using tools safely and for a purpose and trying out different media. Through this the children have the opportunity to; develop their language skills by talking about what they are doing and why they have chosen to do things a certain way (Communication and Language), strengthen their fine and gross motor skills (Physical Development) and express themselves and show the activities they enjoy (Personal, Social and Emotional).

Lots of art can be created using spots. Can you make some spotty art today?

You can use a brush, your fingers, a cotton bud, whatever you like.

Have some colourful fun with this spotty experiment:

Promoting Independence

Using The Water Dispenser

In the nursery we encourage the children to drink water often so in addition to snack time and lunch time they can drink water whenever they are thirsty. Our water dispensers are easy for our children to use, but we don’t want to waste water so we say;

Active Learning

Frozen Pom Pom Soup

Guidance

What you will need:

  • Blue and white Pom Poms

  • Water

  • Ice tray

  • Bowlsand cups

  • Spoons

Get some ice trays and blue and white coloured pom poms (resource pack). Put two pom poms into each section of the ice tray and then fill them with water. Make ice cubes too. You can also add a drop of blue food colouring into a few of the ice cubes. Place them in the freezer overnight in order to ensure that they freeze completely.

Collect some coloured bowls and cups (blue and white if you have them). Some spoons, a serving spoon and a soup ladle.

Once your pom poms have frozen, break them out and place them into a large container and then add about an inch or two of cold water. Cold water will help to keep the pom poms from thawing too quickly.

You could add a drop of blue food colouring in the container.

Your child might want to:

  • Make winter soup for a doll, teddy bear or Lego figure toy.

  • Use their imagination to add small world toys while playing and discovering the icy pom poms.

We Love to See Your Learning!

What could you share on Seesaw today?

Please share with us some videos or photos of your child experimenting with spots and dots.  We would love to see what direction they take the learning and the different media they choose to explore.

You are not limited to the ideas on the blog.  Perhaps your child has displayed a skill for the first time, such as putting on their socks, or riding a bike?  We love sharing these kind of experiences and achievements too!
