Learning Advice for Parents

Balancing: a gross motor skill

Everyone knows that exercise and physical activity is important for a healthy lifestyle, but gross motor activities are more than just “physical activities.” By developing gross motor skills our children gain strength and confidence in their bodies. Gross motor skills also develop their bodies to do more complex skills in future activities, like playing sports.

Learning Focus

5 Little Elephants Balancing

Can you listen and maybe join in with this song?

Our focus challenge today is to build something for your toys to balance on. What will you use to build? You may want to build using bricks or duplo. Or perhaps do some junk modelling using recycled materials.

Ms Jane made a long bridge for a car to balance on and a tall stack of yogurt pots for Monkey to balance on;

What will you balance? Do you have an elephant or maybe a different toy to balance?

You might build something long or you might build something tall. Is it strong enough for your toy to balance on? How tall is it?

Here are some examples of language you can support your child with as they build; short/tall, long, wide, heavy.

You can encourage your child to problem solve how to make it better; stronger, taller, longer.

Promoting Independence

Lunchtime Independence

Health and self care skills are rooted in independence.  We encourage the children to use their spoon confidently and to drink well without spilling from an open cup.

Active Learning

Balancing on a Line

Let’s practice our balancing skills. Can you walk on a straight line? Can you hop or jump on the line? Can you make a zig zag line using tape? Can you balance on the zigzag line with an object on your head? Follow Ms Gemma and do some balancing today!

We Love to See Your Learning!

What could you share on Seesaw today?

We would love to see some videos of your child thinking of ways to balance their toy.  Perseverance and the notion of 'keep on trying' is a key skill that we try to develop in FS, so seeing your child bounce back after perhaps initially being unsuccessful shows us so many different attributes!

You are not limited to the ideas on the blog.  Perhaps your child has displayed a skill for the first time, such as putting on their socks, or riding a bike?  We love sharing these kind of experiences and achievements too!

We hope that you enjoy engaging with our Nursery Blog.

If you have any concerns or queries about your child’s learning, please do not hesitate to contact your child's class teacher via email. They can then arrange a mutually convenient time to meet via MS Teams. Our class teachers always welcome the opportunity to discuss your child’s needs and progress.
