Y3 Newsletter 04.09.26

The children have enjoyed being scientists and finding out about Light and Shadows.

A note from the Principal

Dear Parents,

A highlight this week has been our first Primary-specific assemblies of the year. It was wonderful to welcome all our Year 1–6 students ‘back to school’ and to celebrate what makes our school so special – them!

A reminder for our community. In Primary, students are not permitted to bring mobile phones or wearable technology, including smart watches and smart glasses, to school.

Next week, our ECA programme begins! We are looking forward to seeing students getting involved, spending time with friends and enjoying the fantastic range of activities on offer.

Wellbeing

As you walk around the school, you are almost certain to spot our Safe – Curious – Kind posters.

Many, if not all, of the behaviours and attitudes we want for our students can be explicitly taught.

Positive Behaviours – Positive Attitudes

Classes and year groups choose a small number of relevant targets roughly every half term. We are using this target in Y3 to coincide with walking to  ECAs:

  • We tidy away the things we have used.
  • We have a regular bedtime.
  • We give ourselves time to play and rest.
  • We talk with a trusted adult when we are worried.

Playground use before and after school

Students are not permitted to use any of the climbing or play equipment before 7:30 a.m.

There is no staff supervision in any play area after 2:30.

The accompanying adult is therefore responsible for the safe supervision of the child.

We encourage parents and family employees to take children straight home at the end of the school day.

ECAs Starting

In preparation for the ECAs starting please can you ensure your child is aware of the ECA they have each day, until this becomes routine for them. The class teachers will go through the ECAs with the children each day but the children who already know what they are doing feel more confident about it!

In Y3 the children walk to their ECAs independently. As Patana is such a big school each class will be shown where their ECAs are taking place each day so they know where to go and how to get there. We will also as far as possible buddy up with other children doing the same ECA so they feel comfortable knowing where to go.

All Y3 staff will be on hand after school to help out any children who are unsure or have forgotten where they need to go.

If you have any queries or any changes to ECAs please contact your child's class teacher.

Getting to class on time

Students in Years 1-6 enter their buildings at 7:30.

This gives everyone time to organise their belongings and settle themselves in, ready to learn and in a calm state of mind.

The register is taken at 7:30, and children who arrive after 7:40 are marked as late.

If there is a pattern of lateness during the term, the class teacher will share this information with you so that changes to timings can be made.

Sometimes, a family will need to adjust their arrival time so that a child can be walked in (Years 1 and 2) or dropped off without feeling rushed or stressed.

The start of the day is a very important part of our daily classroom routine.

Teachers use this time to re-set expectations as students switch from home to school mode. This is a time when school staff can check in with individual students and make sure that everyone feels welcomed into class.

Morning Snack in Key Stage 2

From Monday 7th September Year 3 may bring in a healthy snack from home or buy one from the Snack Bar.

Please do not send sweets, chocolate or gum into school. We provide plain or soymilk for every student each break time. Students may bring their own water bottle to school.

Nut Free Primary School

For some children, any exposure to nuts is potentially very dangerous and can be life threatening.

We do not allow any nuts to be brought into Primary. This includes snacks on school transport, birthday treats and food items brought in for any other special days.

Some treats, such as macarons contain hidden nuts. Please check the ingredients before sending into school. If snacks or birthday treats are found to contain nuts, we will contact you and either dispose of the food safely or ask you to collect and take back home.

Snack cards

Please ensure you child has either some money to top up their card on Monday or you have topped it up online for them.

To help you see what is on offer at the Primary snack bar please see below:

A few reminders

  • Hats - your child needs a hat to access all the play areas and for PE lessons. It is best to be left in school all week.
  • Water bottles.
  • Naming property - Please put your child's name and class code on all their uniform, shoes, hats and waterbottles to ensure a safe return if they get left behind! You can buy name stickers from the Tiger shop.

Shoes

  • Primary students are expected to wear white socks and plain black shoes to school. Please see examples below

Hair

  • Hair should be neat and conservative in appearance.
  • Hair longer than shoulder-length should be tied back.

School Jumpers

  • Only the blue Patana school cardigan should be worn at school. These can be purchased at the school shop.

Watches

  • We encourage the children to wear a digital or analogue watch to help them learn the time.
  • Smart watches are not to be worn during the school day. They are kept in bags during the day.

Bags for PE day

  • On PE days the children come to school in PE kit and stay in this all day.

Swimming

  • On swimming days your child should wear their uniform to school. They need to bring their swimming kit in a bag (swimsuit, goggles, towel, swimming hat). Thank you.

Learning

Y3 Curriculum Term 1a

Our main focus for the first few weeks will be settling the children in as they transition to a new Key Stage by helping them move around the school from the classroom to specialist lessons as well as slowly introduce them to the Primary Snack Bar. We will learn all about how to use it in our Maths lessons next week. If you would like more information about our curriculum please visit our Curriculum page here

Reading

The children will be changing their reading books every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. This week the children have been given a reading book based on their stage from Year 2, and from reading with their new teacher.

Please can you support your child by encouraging reading at home, either reading to you or a sibling and helping to remind them to bring their books in (if finished) on book change days.

Music

The children will be learning the recorder this term. You will have received an email about where you can buy these. Please ensure the recorder is named.

Class Blogs

Please visit our class blogs to find out about our learning in each of the classes!
