Guided Reading

This week we will be exploring a beautiful poem called 'Don't Quit' which fit's in lovely with our silver linings of covid weekly theme.

First: Listen to the poem read by Mr Michael and follow the text as he reads.

A Poem by John Greenleaf Whittier; Don't Quit

Don't Quit

By John Greenleaf Whittier

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns

As every one of us sometimes learns

And many a failure comes about

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don't give up though the pace seems slow—

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out—

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell just how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit—

It's when things seem worst that you MUST NOT QUIT.

Then: Watch the video below, which has the actor Idris Elba reading aloud the poem called 'Don't Quit' and sharing a message of how covid can bring us closer;

Finally: Choose from the tasks below to respond to the poem.

Lesson 1 Tasks:

1. Read the text by yourself all the way through.

2. If there are any words or sentences you don’t understand or can’t pronounce:

· Try and use the words and sentences around them to help you guess what they might mean.

· Re-read a sentence or paragraph again if you aren’t sure what is happening.

· Breakdown a word and say it phonetically if you aren’t sure what it says.

· Skip a word that you can’t read yet and see if it makes sense when you have read a bit more.

3. Write down a short 9-word summary of what you think the text is about.

4. Listen to Mr Michael read the text to help you with your pronunciation and the rhythm of the poem.

5. Are there any words or phrases you still don’t understand? Use Google, speak with classmates or ask an adult to find out what they mean.

6. Read the text out loud one more time. You can do this yourself or you can read out loud with Mr Michael’s recording at the same time.

7. CHALLENGE: Write a 5-word or 3-word summary.
