Guided Reading

A Poem by John Greenleaf Whittier; Don't Quit

Don't Quit

By John Greenleaf Whittier

When things go wrong, as they sometimes will,

When the road you're trudging seems all up hill,

When the funds are low and the debts are high,

And you want to smile, but you have to sigh,

When care is pressing you down a bit,

Rest if you must, but don't you quit.

Life is strange with its twists and turns

As every one of us sometimes learns

And many a failure comes about

When he might have won had he stuck it out;

Don't give up though the pace seems slow—

You may succeed with another blow.

Success is failure turned inside out—

The silver tint of the clouds of doubt,

And you never can tell just how close you are,

It may be near when it seems so far;

So stick to the fight when you're hardest hit—

It's when things seem worst that you MUST NOT QUIT.

Lesson 2 Tasks:

1. On Microsoft Teams, find one or two other people from your class and read through the text together with them.

THE PEOPLE YOU SPEAK WITH SHOULD BE DIFFERENT FROM THE PEOPLE YOU SPOKE WITH FOR GUIDED READING LAST TIME.

Swap over who is reading at the end of every sentence. When you have read all the text, go back to the beginning and swap over which sentence you read.

2. Choose a line of the poem and discuss this with your classmate. Try and explain what any unusual words mean or what the line is saying in your own words.

EXAMPLE: Life is strange with its twists and turns.

This means that we don’t know what will happen in our lives and we can’t predict the future. Things happen that we don’t know will happen or that we didn’t think would happen. Twists and turns means like on a drive on the road you do not know what is coming next around the corner.
