Google operators - Efficient searching (Reliable sources)

Intelligent Searching

Overarching unit question:

How can you use the internet to search quickly and efficiently?

In this unit we will be looking at search operators and how we can use them to search the internet.

Learning Intention - Can I tell the difference between a reliable source and an unreliable source?

Success Criteria

1) I can understand how to tell if a website is likely to be reliable or unreliable

2) I understand the difference between a primary and a secondary source

ESSENTIAL QUESTION

Why is it important to evaluate the source and validity of the information found on a Web site?

ISTE student standards:

Students evaluate the accuracy, perspective, credibility, and relevance of information, media, data, or other resources.

How can I check if my webpage (resource) is useful to me?

Steps to check:

1. Examine the website that you have found the information on - Who is it by? Have you heard of them? Are they an expert? Are they biased?

2. Cross check with other websites - Try and find at least 2 other websites that either agree or disagree with the information you found on the 1st website.

3. Make a decision, do you trust the website? Use the knowledge you have gained from step 1 and 2.

Tips

Read the first 2 paragraphs of the website

-- Snip the title and first paragraph and put it on your blog

What is it telling you?

Use Google (with operators) to search to see if other websites agree or disagree with it

--- Snip what you find (at least 2 sources/websites) and put them on your blog

If you are still not sure Google the author

-- Snip what you find

Write, on your blog, whether you think the boilerplate website is reliable or unreliable

PUBLISH YOUR BLOG

Why are these skills important and relevant?

Fake news websites (also referred to as hoax news[1][2]) deliberately publish hoaxes, propaganda, and disinformation purporting to be real news — often using social media to drive web traffic and amplify their effect.[3][4][5] Unlike news satire, fake news websites seek to mislead, rather than entertain, readers for financial, political, or other gain.[6][4]

Challenge 2: Create a custom search for Year 1 or 2

Between your table come up with at least 5 reliable websites for Year 2 to use for research!

Choose one topic:

1) Wonders of the world

2) Animals in Africa

3) World Sports

Write them on your blog and say why you picked them!

Reflection time!

At the bottom of your blog document put a title called reflection.

  • What have you learnt today?

  • How might this be useful in the future?
