Lesson 5 and 6: Photoshop - What is Masking?

What are we aiming for in Photoshop?

Photoshop is basically three things:

Selecting, Moving, and Blending.

You'll hear me talk about these three things and use similar words that mean one of these three areas. I might be cutting (selecting), layering (moving) and composing (blending).

1. Learning about Masking - Drag an image into Photoshop and make a base layer for learning how to mask.

File>> New >> Print >> 18 x 24 or 24 x 36 inches >> Decent name for the artwork

In this part we are going to learn: What is masking? What can masking do?

First we need a flattened working layer. Find the Mr Glenn Masking Tut image here.

1.1: Download this image and import into your new art board.

1.2: Rasterize your layer and select the astronaut using the ‘Quick Select’ Tool.

1:3: Use the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ parts of the tool to add and take away parts of the image.

1.4: Hit the mask tool at the bottom of the layers window.

2. Using the Brush tool to add and remove parts of the mask.

2.1: Use the brush to both harden and resize the tip so that you can take more away and soften the edges of the selection.

2.2: Use the ‘X’ key to quickly switch foreground and background colours so you can remove and add black and white to the mask.

Masking: BLACK will remove the image and WHITE will add

2:3: Take your time.

Right Click your layer to 'RASTERIZE' it so you can edit it.

2.4: Save your image somewhere, maybe on your desktop, ready to upload to Google Drive later.

File >> Save / Save As... and put it on your Desktop. It should have a name by now. If it doesn't give it s proper name: YOUR NAME MASKING TUT or something like that.

4. Masking for colour Effects with Duo Tone

4.1: Now you have the masking tool under wraps, it’s now time to use the gradient map on your astronaut. This take all the white in the photo and turns it into another colour  and then, all the blacks into another colour. This is ‘DUO TONE’.

5. See This Clip To Help You Understand What Duo Tone is

6. Your Own Practice Compositions

In this section you will need to understand two parts of building an image and then to gather the assets in order to build it.

Assets for making your own composition, should you NOT want to search your own images are here.

6.1: Rule of thirds:

6.2: Types of image we can make using Duo Tone and and Masking

6. Your Own Practice in This Video

6.3: Should you finish, find other planet or moon images on UnSplash.com and practice the selecting technique with colour properties as in the video.
