Lesson 1 and 2: Photoshop basics

What is Photoshop?

Photoshop is basically three things:

Selecting, Moving, and Blending.

You'll hear me talk about these three things and use similar words that mean one of these three areas. I might be cutting (selecting), layering (moving) and composing (blending).

1. Introduction. Opening Photoshop, dragging in an image and making your first selection.

1.1 Open Photoshop from your Apps Menu.

1.2 Download the Astronaut image with black background to somewhere like 'Downloads' folder.

1.3 Drag the image from the 'Downloads' folder into the Photoshop window and see what happens inside Photoshop.

2. Using the Magic Wand tool and the Quick Selection tool to remove the black space background.

CTRL + D is to deselect the marching ants

2.1 - Save your image somewhere, maybe on your desktop, ready to upload to Google Drive later.

2.2 - Go to FILE>> NEW>> to see something like this:

CS6 Window

2.3 - Go to PRINT>> A4 as in the image. Give it a Name like: ASTRONAUT 2 as in the image above.

2.4 - Drag in the image again as you did before and follow these steps to use the Magic Wand tool (shortcut: W)

2.5 - Save your image somewhere, maybe on your desktop, ready to upload to Google Drive later.

3. Selecting with Colour

3.1 Follow the steps in 2.2 to open a new image. Except this time, choose 'WEB MOST COMMON' in the image below and call it something like 'Trees Colours'

3.2 - Drag this image into Photoshop once you have downloaded it.

3.3 - Follow this tutorial on Colour selecting.

3.4 - if you finish, find another trees at night image on UnSplash.com and practice the selecting technique with colour gradients as in the video.
