A note from the Principal

Dear Parents

Welcome back to Term 3! It's great to see all our students return to school after the holidays, refreshed and ready to learn.

This week, we are happy to have to hosted Parent-Teacher Meetings across all year groups. This is an opportunity for us to celebrate the successes of our fantastic students and for you to discuss their progress with their teachers. Many of these meetings have happened in person, but we are also delighted to continue offering meetings via MS Teams.

Term 3 is always a busy one for us, with a great many activities and events taking place. It is also a time when we start to plan for our new academic year, including resource orders, class allocations, and teacher placements. Next week, I will be sharing information on the, small number of, valued staff members who are leaving us this year. This will give you a chance to say a fond farewell!

On that note, do you know someone who might wish to join the Patana teaching team? We are always looking for qualified and experienced cover teachers, able to join us for short- and medium-term placements. If you know of someone who might be a good fit, please pass on my email contacts of samc@patana.ac.th.

We are all looking forward to an exciting and productive Term 3, filled with new learning opportunities, engaging activities, and meaningful experiences for all our students. Thank you for your ongoing support.

Sarah McCormack

Learning

Home Language (HOLA) assessments in Year 6:

Over the next couple of weeks some Year 6 students will be assessed in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and French. The aim is for the World Languages (WL) Secondary team to know your children and their language skills better to offer them the best language pathway in Secondary. The language chosen should present a certain challenge to keep students engaged and motivated as they move up secondary school.

There is no need to do any revision or preparation for this assessment. The selection of students is based on information provided by parents in the Language option form shared earlier this year.

Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact me, Virginie Turner (vitu@patana.ac.th).

Year 6 Technology in Term 3

I am very excited to share with you the new project that is happening in Term 3 within Technology classes.

The children will be learning to create gatefold LP album covers with an app on the iPad called Procreate (in my opinion, one of the best iPad apps in the last 5 years for creativity, if not the best). Procreate is similar to Photoshop, but the emphasis is on painting and an emphasis on raw art than graphics as you would in Photoshop or Illustrator. The main emphasis is on depth of skill at layer management, cropping, composition, file management, editing and publishing a digital artefact that is inline with current processes in the graphics industry.

What will the children be creating?

This will mean that children will combine artwork from their art class and technology class as either a front cover or inside cover depending on preference. They will use a favourite piece of writing from Year 6 as a third page understanding font and typefaces in their home language. Finally on the rear cover will contain their music from the music class as a QR code and 12 track listing of their best moments of primary school. The LP inside will be signed by the whole class as a memory of year their time in year 6.

A Parental Request.

I would like to ask if there is an iPad in your home that you would allow you child to use for these nine-week lessons. This will allow children to edit and design at home, or if you are a Procreate user develop your skills further. If this is possible, the iPads need to be any iPad (except iPad Mini) from 2019 onward that has Procreate installed. Apple pencils are optional. Protective cases are a must have. Charging will be a student responsibility as there are no power outlets in the multi-purpose room in Year 6. If it's not possible, this is not a problem as we have iPads here in school and the children can learn with them week to week we are pre-empting the oft-asked request 'how do we do this at home?'

If your child uses an iPad at school already, would it be possible to purchase and install Procreate for them - it's currently $12.

Go to: https://procreate.com/ for more information or look though Gal Shir's work on YouTube/ Instagram for inspriation.

Any questions about the project or Procreate itself, please feel free to email me, Mr Glenn:  glma@patana.ac.th
