Year 5 Newsletter 3rd November

A note from the Principal

Dear Parents,

I hope this finds everyone well. A couple of highlights to share with you this week. On Tuesday, Peter Taylder and I presented to almost 200 parents on our vision for Assessment and Reporting. It was a great session, where we looked at the new CAT 4 data and the upcoming changes to the report templates. The powerpoint can be found on the Parent Gateway and here. There will be another workshop exploring this theme on Tuesday, 28 November.

In our assemblies we have been considering ‘what makes us special’. We had a sneak peek at some of some of our 243 student FlipGrid videos (so far!) and considered how we can all contribute to our community of kindness. We love when parents join our assemblies as it helps us to reinforce our values and gives parents an opportunity to see what we are learning. This is a wonderful story on belonging and we would love everyone to re-watch it at home.

This busy Principal is off to Kuala Lumpur today for the Fobisia leadership conference!

Well-Being

Friendship Friday - 10th November

Year 5 are supporting the Baan Dek Foundation as one of our charities. Their mission statement is to improve the well-being of vulnerable children and their families living in urban slums and construction site camps in Thailand.

Dao Ethical Gifts (DEG) is a spin-off social enterprise of Baan Dek Foundation (BDF). DEG aims to promote the economic empowerment of socially and economically vulnerable Thai women living in hazardous environments like urban slums and construction site camps.

In partnership with BDF, these women are provided with training on work readiness skills, financial literacy, childcare solutions, and upskilling training such as sewing.

In order to give continuity to DEG’s social impact, DEG additionally provides these women with opportunities to produce customized and sustainable handmade products for DEG's various clients and earn complementary income. This helps them to not only contribute to their family’s sustenance but also to build confidence, and feel empowered.

DEG will have a stall in our Friendship Friday market. Please pop by to support this social enterprise. You can click on the link to see some of their products that will be on sale.

Class Blogs and home learning

Here is the link to the Year 5 blogs. You will find an overview of your child's learning along with their home learning tasks and any important messages from your child's class teacher.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning.

Global Citizenship

Events In The World

You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show.  Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.

We are a NUT FREE school. Please when ordering birthday treats double check before bringing treats on the campus. Many toppings offered by some donut shops have flaked almonds in their toppings and peanut butter fillings.

  • Individual treats can be brought into school with your child in the morning.
  • Please agree a time with the teacher in advance.
  • Children will be expected to eat any birthday treats outside of classrooms.
