Year 5 Newsletter 17th March 2023

17 March 2023

A note from the Principal

Dear Parents,

It is a wonder how we fit in some many wonderful experiences in one week! I have so many highlights to share with you today. Firstly, the annual Fun Day event held last Saturday was a huge success. Our dedicated PTG did an superb job, and it was great to see so many happy students and parents spending the day with us.

Our Year 3 students have had a fantastic time on their residential trip to Pattaya. The venue and activities were excellent, and it's always wonderful to see our students learning and having fun outside of the classroom. I am delighted to have joined the Y3 and Y4 residential this year, and I will attend Y5 and Y6 next!

Also during the course of the week, our FS2, Y1, and Y2 students experienced a fantastic Sports Day. It was a fun-filled day with a variety of activities and our youngest students demonstrated great sportsmanship. Thanks to the PE team, our supporting staff and all the Parents who joined us.

Lastly, this weekend, I will be attending the Fobisia leadership conference. I am looking forward to learn from, and network with, other education professionals and bring back new insights to our school.

Thanks for reading, and have a great weekend ahead!

Sarah McCormack

Well-being

Smart watches for Term 3 April 23

A simple watch can help children to develop an understanding of time and support their independence. Our preference is for a basic analogue model.

A growing number of children are now wearing a smart watch to school. Many of these watches allow for online access, including games and other features that they do not need in school.  Some children spend time interacting with their watch instead of talking and playing with their friends. There have also been concerns about unsupervised access to online content, including taking and sending images.

Starting from Term 3, Primary students will be required to keep their smart watch in their bag during the school day.

Please note, that the school takes no responsibility for loss or damage and only Year 6 have access to a secure locker.

Smart watches can be taken out of bags once a child exits the school gates at 2:30 or once their ECA has ended at 3:30 or 4:30.

Smart watches can be worn on school transport but should never be used to take or send images whilst on the bus.

ECA Information

Friday 31st March 2023 Block C ECA programme finishes.

Please remember that all children should know how they are getting home and where they are meeting parents or drivers. If you are running late to collect your child, please do let us know.

PE and getting changed

All students can now come to school in their PE kit on Monday and Friday, but they MUST bring their uniform to get changed into afterwards.

Learning

PSHE

This week during PSHE we looked at how identities can be hidden online. Below are some of our key learning points.

We explored whether or not this was a good thing. There are a number of good reasons for anonymity or shielding one's identity online. One is to limit or control how personal data is collected and stored, as well as who can access and use it.

However, it's easy to forget that real people are behind the usernames that we interact with, so being anonymous online can result in unkind behaviour.

We explored how images are copied, modified and altered and what the implications  of this are.

Please discuss the importance of never trusting people online as people can often hide their identity and pretend to be someone else to befriend them and gain their trust.

Class Blogs and home learning

Here is the link to the Year 5 blogs. You will find an overview of your child's learning along with their home learning tasks and any important messages from your child's class teacher.

Please check your child's class blog weekly to stay informed about their learning.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning.

Global Citizenship

Events In The World

You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show.  Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.

Birthdays

We are a NUT FREE school. Please when ordering birthday treats double check before bringing treats on the campus. Many toppings offered by some donut shops have flaked almonds in their toppings and peanut butter fillings.

  • Individual treats can be brought into school with your child in the morning.
  • Please agree a time with the teacher in advance.
  • Children will be expected to eat any birthday treats outside of classrooms.
  • Parents can join in the celebrations.
