Well-being
Smart Watches in school
We encourage children to wear a watch to school, to help them keep track on time and develop independence.
However, many smart watches allow for phone and message contact, internet access, online games, and other features that they do not need in school.
Access to games via a smart watch distracts children from other social play activities and conversations.
Messaging or calling home during the school day distracts your child from listening and learning.
If your child does have a smart watch, please talk with your child about which functions can and cannot be used in school.
Please set your child’s smart watch to block these functions whilst at school, including ECA time.
Need support with setting up a device? Click on the image to get to a video by Brian Taylor explaining this.

International Dot Day
Everyone had a wonderful time celebrating Dot day. You can see the installations in the Primary canteen. We also started to prepare our very own installation which will be on display in Year 5. You can see this when you visit the year group for parent teacher meetings.
World Peace Day
World Peace Day is on the 21st September. Students are asked to come to school wearing purple clothes.
There will also be a Year 5 & 6 assembly, which parents are invited to join in the theatre at 8:10am. If you do come along, please could we ask that your sit with your child's year group. Y6 students will sit upstairs in the theatre, parents to sit in the back rows of the upper tier. Staff will be able to help you with this.
Learning
Are you up for the challenge of writing a whole novel in a month?
NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) is a fun, empowering and engaging way to write creatively. The main challenge is in November but you can also write novels at any time of the year.
Sign up for an account here using my class code below: https://ywp.nanowrimo.org/
You need your parents' permission so ask them to sit with you while you register.
Get started with your first piece of writing now if you want! I will be able to read your writing and offer feedback and support, and you can also share with other students in our classes.
There are also some great resources to help you craft your writing style that you can use.
In November, we will join the challenge and hopefully you will be successful in publishing a whole novel within a month!
Times Table Rockstars - Improving Times Tables
Times tables are a fundamental skill in Maths. To help our students improve this skill, we are using Times Tables Rockstars.
Practising often has a positive impact on the development of this skill and improves recall and confidence.
Please support your child to practise at home. Ideally, they should practise for around ten minutes at least four times a week.
We will have regular practise in school as well.
Class Blogs and home learning
Here is the link to the Year 5 blogs. You will find an overview of your child's learning along with their home learning tasks and any important messages from your child's class teacher.
Please check your child's class blog weekly to stay informed about their learning.
Please encourage your child to complete their home learning.

Parents supporting the Learning in Year 5
Thank you to those parents who have expressed an interest in supporting the learning in Year 5.
A letter will be sent out by the Primary Office next week for volunteers to sign up for a Safeguarding training session.
Events In The World
You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show. Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.
