Well-being

Performance Week

Well done to all of the Year 5 students who shared their love of music during our music lessons this week. It was wonderful seeing how confidently they  took to the stage.

Relationship and Sex Education

This week, we have explored human reproduction and the ingredients for making a baby. We learnt that we need a male sex cell (sperm), a female sex cell (an egg), love and care and a womb. We had many questions. We were able to answer some of these:

  • How are twins made?
  • How does the baby get food?
  • How does the baby breathe in the womb?

Some students were curious about how the male sex cell journeyed to the female sex cell. This is not a part of our Year 5 curriculum, so we told children that they would learn about this next year, but we also encouraged them to speak to parents about any questions they have.

Next week, we will learn about puberty in single sex groups. No doubt, students will have many questions about this learning.

Here are two age-appropriate books to support your child as they start to navigate the changes that come with puberty.

The books are written for children aged 8 and above, but parents/carers will also find the content helpful, body-positive and reassuring.

Learning

Laptops for learning

All Year 6 to 13 students are required to have a laptop for their schoolwork which can be configured by the school for the school network. While this laptop can also be used at home for leisure activities it should primarily be thought of as a device to support learning.

So what kind of portable computer will best support students in their learning at Bangkok Patana School?

We have learnt that students are not able to complete their schoolwork unless their laptop is of a certain standard so we have agreed on the following minimum specifications for laptops the students are required to provide.

Click here to find out more about the specifications..

PE Curriculum Update

TGFU= (Teaching Games for Understanding) Patana PE kit, sunhat and water bottle required

Home Learning and Class Blogs

Here is the link to the Year 5 blogs.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning. Each week, Mathletics tasks are set. These consolidate the week's learning. There is also a Literacy of Connected Learning task based on the learning.

This is posted on your child's class blog.

Global Citizenship

Musician of the Month - Let's celebrate music

The featured musicians, Bangkok Paradise Molam International Band, are quite an eclectic mix of Thai traditional and Western style instruments based on Molam music of Isaan.

Birthday treats and plastic packaging

Patana students love celebrating each other’s birthdays, but are often dismayed by the plastic packaging when treats are brought into school.

When bringing treats into school, please choose items that are not individually wrapped in plastic.

The children eat with their hands – so no need for individually wrapped forks or spoons. Children can wash and sanitize their hands before and afterwards.

Little changes can make a big difference.

Events In The World

You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show.  Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.

Birthdays

We are a NUT FREE school. Please when ordering birthday treats double check before bringing treats on the campus. Many toppings offered by some donut shops have flaked almonds in their toppings and peanut butter fillings.

  • Individual treats can be brought into school with your child in the morning.
  • Please agree a time with the teacher in advance.
  • Children will be expected to eat any birthday treats in their classroom.
  • Unfortunately, parents can not join in the celebrations.
  • Your child's class teacher will however share a photograph with you.
