The children in 1L, 1G, 1J and 1E have enjoyed being scientists this week as we held a rotation of science experiments in our four classes. we investigated some science problems linked to our favourite fairy tales:
- Floating and sinking- predicting and testing different materials to make a life jacket for the troll.
1L earned some super rainbow spots today when they ran, jumped, threw, crawled and zigzagged their way through Sports Day. We saw some really excellent PE skills being used on the big field and the children had lots of fun too.Everybody tried hard to do their very best and it was pleasing to see everyone happily joining in the games and having such a good time. Many thanks to the huge group of Y1L parents who came to cheer on their children at Sports day - it was great to have so many parents along to enjoy the fun.
This week in 1L, 1G 1E and 1J we are learning about science related to some of the fairy tales we know. As a great start to the week we invited two science teachers from secondary school to show the children some wonderful scientific potions that Secondary students might make in Chemistry. The year 1 children were fascinated by the changes in colour and great bubbling flasks of chemicals. We tested out some amazing magic beans and fairy dust as well as watching various solutions change colour and produce smoke as dry ice was added to the mixture. Many thanks to Dr MacGregor and Matt Baker for creating the most wonderful display of potions and magical reactions for the children to see.
Today we celebrated the Chinese New Year by wearing read and gold colours to school. The children looked very smart in their Chinese costumes and colours. We enjoyed a very informative assembly and learned about how Chinese new Year is celebrate in other Asian countries as well as China. The choir sang a Chinese new year greeting for us and we were amazed by the beautiful Chinese tunes played on a Chinese instrument , a little like a harp. The finale was the dancing Lions which arrived with lots of loud drumming - it was very exciting and the children were thrilled to watch it!
This term we shall be learning to retell the Story of Jack and The Beanstalk. Have a look at these videos to help you learn the story and see if you can tell the story to a friend.
