A note from the Principal

A note from the Principal

Working in a school is truly a rewarding and unpredictable experience and this week has been filled with delightful moments and unexpected encounters!

Firstly, I had the pleasure of meeting our visiting author Mr. Matt Dickinson who climbed Everest. Then, I was called in by Year 2 students to assist in rescuing a toad from a pond, who sat with me for some time whilst he got warm. I counted to 100 with a student in Nursery, proving that learning knows no bounds. During lunchtime, I had the joy of hearing about the fascinating tales of two Year 5 students and their multiple pets. Lastly, I had the privilege of guiding Year 6 students in writing their own captivating stories based on a short film. Each of these encounters has reminded me of the immense joy and fulfilment that comes from working in a school environment, where every day brings new and wonderful surprises.

On Tuesday, another positive highlight was meeting our parents for an end of year celebration and reflection on all that we have achieved this year. Thank you for attending! If you have not yet had the opportunity, please do complete our short end of year parent survey. The deadline is on Monday, 5 June.

We hope you have a fantastic long weekend!

Expo - How can we educate others to make healthy life choices?

Year 6 are working hard on preparing for their Expo on the 16th June.  The children are learning and researching so that they can answer the question above.  The Expo will provide an opportunity for the students to share their learning and educate our Year 6 parents and Y5 student visitors.

We will open our doors at 8:45am, but parents can join us anytime between 8:45 and 9:45am. You will need at least 30 minutes to fully enjoy and experience the event.

Interclass - 16th June

The PE department will be hosting an Interclass Event straight after the Y6 Expo - more information about exact start times and location to come in next week's newsletter. But the event will start at approximately 10:10am

A Curriculum Enhanced by Engagement, Motivation and Critical Thinking

Engagement, motivation and critical thinking – how do these contribute to effective learning?

On Tuesday morning, during our Parent Workshop, many parents gathered to learn more about how the significance of these skills impact our learning. When asked about what key skills parents believed their children needed to be successful, there was a clear pattern: empathy, resilience, problem solving. As we dived deeper into the Characteristics of Effective Learning, we found that they encompass and incorporate lots of these skills – and more!

Through different activities, discussions and feedback, we learnt that engagement goes beyond participation; it’s active involvement and a curation of curiosity in the process of learning. Motivation encompasses the ownership and child-led direction of the learning and critical thinking allows children to analyse, evaluate and problem solve independently. All of these skills were on display as our parents took on some activities themselves: creating fractions using Lego, then building a bridge using newspaper and other resources. High levels of engagement, motivation and critical thinking were on display as we saw a huge range of bridges that were strong enough to hold wooden bricks!
