Year 6 Newsletter 1st December 2023

Note from the Principal

1 December 2023

A note from the Principal

It is hard to believe it is the 1st of December today! Term 1 has galloped by at an amazing speed and I am still not used to warm winter months! Needless to say, as the holidays soon approach we are all excited for the festival celebrations ahead.

On Tuesday this week, we hosted our 2nd parent workshop on assessment and reporting. Much of the session was dedicated to looking at our new ways of reporting attainment and progress and the new report template. Our teachers are busy writing reports at the moment and these will be shared with you in the last week of term.

Have a lovely weekend and don’t forget next Tuesday is a public holiday!

Wellbeing

Gift giving

Giving gifts to friends and family is a lovely thing.

However, we do not expect or encourage gifts from a family to the whole class.

Please do not bring in gifts, sweets, candy canes or toys for the class.

Edible gifts can cause problems for some families, and we do not allow sweets/candy in school.

Many of our students give gifts to families and children in need through our year group charities, and this we completely support.

Preventing the spread of influenza

We currently have a number of children absent with influenza. Influenza is a serious and contagious infection that affects the nose, throat, and respiratory system. The virus is commonly spread through droplets in the air, allowing infection to spread quickly.

Children with cold or flu (influenza) symptoms should be kept at home until they are completely recovered. Even when the main symptoms have gone, your child may still need time to return to full strength.

Please do not send your child back to school too soon, even if they are no longer in the contagious phase. If your child is still coughing or sneezing, please keep them at home and limit their contact with other children.

A child who has a fever should be kept at home until ‘fever free’ for a minimum of 24 hours.

When unsure, always seek medical advice, especially if a child has a chronic condition e.g., asthma.

If Influenza is confirmed, please send a copy of the medical certificate to Nurse@patana.ac.th

Learning

Apologies, as this information was not shared on Friday in our Y6 newsletter for parents.  All Year 6 students are aware of the options they can chose from, as this has been shared in class and in PE sessions. Students should all be aware of the days they can bring their scooters in, so we hope not too many students are affected.

In addition to the dates below, students in 6P, 6T, 6J and 6L will get another opportunity to complete their star challenge next Monday, 11th so that they can bring in their scooters / rollerblades and helmets,  if they wish.

World Languages Options - Secondary

Please select the Modern Foreign Language and a reserve choice that you wish your child to study next academic year in Year 7, by following this link: World Languages Options for Year 7 (2024/25) (google.com)

It may be possible for some students to study a Home Language at KS3 for WL2 ; this is dependent on whether we have the minimum required number of students. Please note that it is not possible to guarantee such courses beyond KS3 (end of Year 9).

Next academic year, we are offering: Korean, Japanese, Mandarin First and Second Language, and French as Home Languages. These languages will be offered in curriculum time, and at an additional cost.

Mandarin Second Language is a course for students who speak Mandarin at home but who are not necessarily fully bilingual. If your child currently takes Singaporean Mandarin, they may be eligible for this course; an assessment by Secondary teachers would be undertaken to determine suitability for this course.

Korean, Japanese and Mandarin will be studied with an external provider who will run the course online. French will be study with a face-to-face teacher.

Please select a “reserve” choice for WL2 in the event that the course does not run.

These languages cannot be guaranteed at this time and students will also need an assessment to ensure the suitability of the course.

Please contact Mrs Courenq (ceco@patana.ac.th), Head of World Languages or Ms Diaz Lopez (vidi@patana.ac.th), the Home Language Coordinator if you have any questions
