Today was the culmination of our term's learning all about toys. It was wonderful for the children to be able to talk about their toys and playgrounds, sharing their learning with parents. The children especially enjoyed reading their collaborative toy stories to parents and it was fun to have a peep at all the learning that the rest of the Year 1 children had done. We were thrilled that so many parents could join us for our special Toy Expo. On Monday we shall start our learning based around Fairy tales.
Today saw the arrival of the Patana Playground Inspector to 1L in order to check our miniature playgrounds for safety. The Playground Inspector was rather officious and had lots of tough questions for the children regarding the layout and safety of their playground equipment. Some children had to make a few quick alterations in order to pass the very strident safety Inspection.Happily one area that everyone easily passed was when the inspector assessed the playgrounds for fun!
Eventually all the safety test were completed and we were very relieved to find out that all of 1L'S playgrounds passed the inspection. The Safety Inspector presented all of the children with their own safety certificate and now the playgrounds are open for the little people to use.Come and see our playgrounds we have designed and made at out Toy Expo tomorrow.
Today saw the publication of four very special new books. They are fiction books and have been written by our budding authors in Year 1L as part of our collaborative writing groups. The book are all based on stories about the children's favourite toys which they brought in to school. The children worked in four groups to plan a toy story making sure there was a beginning , middle and end to the story as well as a problem and a solution to the problem. The children chose their own settings for the stories and their toys were the characters in the story. Photographs of the toy's adventures were taken to illustrate the books too The four books written by 1L are titled:
As part of the KS1 maths morning 1L were learning about halving. We had a busy morning as we rotated in our maths groups around various halving activities in the classroom. the activities included:
- Learning about the halving function. We used halving machines and worked any any tricky questions using multilink blocks to count and divide into two equal groups.
- Playing a game of Stars and Moons where the idea was to find the exact half of each number. If you found the correct answer you kept the counters which were added at the end of the game.
- We learned how to find half of a length by folding it and keeping the ends level. We then cut various strips of paper string, ribbon, wool and pipe cleaners exactly in half and recorded the 1/2 symbol on out page.
- We also played a quick halving game against the clock on the interactive white board which the children loved.
This week we have started making our miniature playgrounds for the Little people. We have planned our playgrounds and thought carefully about which materials to use. now we are starting to create our wonderful playgrounds using lots of newly acquired skills to measure, cut and join materials together. Our play equipment is beginning to take shape in our playgrounds and we are using our imaginations to decorate the playgrounds and make them attractive to the Little people.
