I own a Macbook, HELP!

Owning a Macbook and using MacOS will allow you to use a computer in a very easy and simple way. Lots of the software you use on a Windows device and have to install is already there, for free, on a Macbook.

The main areas of our Macbooks we are  going to learn about are:

ChromeDock

“Your task is to choose one aspect from any three options above. Then find a random Macbook partner in class and demo what you know to them. They then do the same for you. Learn together!”

Google Chrome

One Application that is not on either though, is Google Chrome.

So, search Google for Chrome. On a Windows device you need to do this in Edge and on a Macbook, you need to use Safari.

Go here: https://www.google.com/chrome/

Chrome Extensions and signing into Chrome.

As you did in Year 5, sign into Chrome with your school username and password. Make sure you hit the ‘Sync’ button and ‘Link Data’

You will need extensions. So open a new tab, look to the left and find the ‘Apps waffle Menu’.

Search for these extensions:

1. Adblock Plus - stops a lot of adverts appearing on your pages. Not all, but many.

2. Ublock Origin. This is probably the best advert blocker on Chrome. It’s open source, meaning it’s not run by a company trying to make lots of money, it’s made for benefit of people who use it.

3. Ghostery - This is like an advert blocker but it blocks the things on the Internet that follow you. A little bit like how the recommendations work in YouTube: you watch one video and another similar is offered to you. This is tracking on a specific website.

4. Grammerly. Helps us to write better and learn to use better sentence structure.

5. YouTube Enhancer. This is extension helps you to focus on the content you ar learning about in YouTube. It opens the video to 1080p, goes into large mode automatically and darkens the background so the video is shown to you without distraction.

6. Not an extension, however, when you are logged in, click on your profile pic, and open the ‘Dark Theme: off’ and turn to on.

The Dock

What is the Dock? The dock is where your apps are, or more, where you can find them as they are linked to your Applications folder.

You dock has lots of things it can do too. We see this video to help you understand what the dock is a does.

Trackpad

Trackpad basics...

Using shortcuts with your trackpad so that you can move objects on your pages.

Scroll and Zoom in this video is very important, as there are two types of scroll: natural and reverse. Natural is like a phone, but can be a little strange to move it this way.

Look at the three options in the ‘Trackpad’ settings below.

Trackpad: Lookup, thesaurus and dictionary

Use three fingers to look up the meanings of words any where on your Mac. This is the same as on an iPad too.

Simply three-finger tap on any word and you will find a pop up like this one on the right, with references to different locations around the web for how the word is used.

Finder

What is finder? Finder is where you find your files and apps that aren’t in the dock. It looks like this image here -—->>

Spotlight

Spotlight is one of the most important applications on your Macbook.

Preview & Quicklook.

Click once on any file and then hit spacebar. This will open quicklook for you. You can then look inside the file or edit this file/ photo etc without opening the program for it. Super useful and fast too.

Remove the white background from images. Intermediate level.

Edit Photos in Preview on a Macbook.
