Early Mathematical Development
Mathematics skills are rooted in the prime areas of physical development and communication and language. In order to be able to count, children must first be able to say number names in sequence. Many of our children can recite numbers in different languages...this is awesome! Some children are able to count accurately with 1:1 correspondence. This means they are able to touch one object, saying each number name in turn. They know to count each object once only and to stop when all the objects have been counted. Lining objects up will help with this.
Can you go on an animal hunt in your house?
Look through your toys to see how many animals you have.
Can you count how many teddy bears?
How many dinosaurs?
How many……?
You can decide how you would like to sort your animals. You might like to sort them by colour, just like the different coloured animals in the story. Or, you might like to sort them according to where they like to live? Some animals need to be in the sea, some animals like to live in the trees and some animals are happy on the ground.
We would love you to upload an ILD observation of your child counting and sorting their toy animals.
Mindfulness
This game develops mindfulness of body, surroundings and sounds, focus and calm.
Tell your child that you are going on a senses hunt. You are going to stop at 3 different places and each time you are going to use different senses to see what you can notice at each spot. You are going to use your sense of sight (eyes), sense of sound (ears) and sense of touch (hands).

Early Phonics Development
What noises do your different animals make?
Sound discrimination is one of the early stages of phonics development and links to communication and language skills. Phonics is a method of teaching children to read by linking sounds and the symbols that represent them. In nursery, we know that by teaching our children to hear the difference in everyday sounds now, they will be developing the ability to hear the difference between letter sounds later.
