As we celebrate the Lunar New Year this week, we have been thinking about our different cultures and different experiences and how wonderful they all are. We wish all our nursery community happiness and prosperity.
We have enjoyed a visit from the lions, we watched how they dance, jump and move and we had a try at being the lion too. Some children enjoyed the music of the drums and explored the different drums and the sounds they made. Our ever resourceful children decided that even though our lion was very friendly, it was a good idea to feed him and luckily enough one of our new drums looked just like a huge lion sized lollipop! Our week culminated on Friday with dress up day...how spectacular do we look?
2022 is the year of the Tiger, which is very close to our heart as our school mascot is also a Tiger!
What are the personality traits of people born in the year of the Tiger?
They are courageous and energetic, love a challenge or competition and are prepared to take risks. This sounds very much like our nursery children.
We are so incredibly proud of how the nursery children managed a huge change on Friday. We love that we got to enjoy the awesome Foundation Stage building, gardens and the gymnastic soft play area upstairs! Not only did we see the resilience and courage that came with meeting a new challenge, we saw children able to listen and follow instructions and solve problems!
Here are some snapshots of our energetic and playful learning this week...
Here are some challenges you might like to try at home:
1. Ribbon dancing - create a 'ribbon' by finding a long, thin scarf, a piece of material or cutting a length of ribbon. Choose your music and see what shapes you can create in the air? Big rotations of shoulders and smaller wiggles are all perfect to develop muscle strength, control and coordination.
2. Making Lunar New Year inspired red and gold slime - a fabulous way to develop sensory play, observing details and making connections with scientific changes, but also not forgetting the value of understanding a recipe, following instructions and speaking about our results!
STEP 1: In a bowl add 1/2 cup water and 1/2 cup glue and mix well to combine completely.
STEP 2: Now’s the time to add the red food colouring, glitter, and/or confetti! Stir well.
STEP 3: Pour in 1/4 cup of liquid starch and stir well.
You will see the slime immediately start to form and pull away from the sides of the bowl. Keep stirring until you have a gooey blob of slime. The liquid should be gone!
STEP 4: Start kneading your slime! It will appear stringy at first but just work it around with your hands and you will notice the consistency change.
Wishing you all a wonderful and restful weekend.
