Ice Age Excavation

Today we are going to create your own Ice Age in a tab or bucket and then once frozen you can excavate it using a range of tools and materials.

You will need:

  • Small toys
  • Water
  • A tub or bucket
  • Access to a freezer
  • Tools - Hammer, chisel, toothbrush, spray bottle, squeezie bottles, spoons, forks, tongs
  • Salt
  • Blue/Green food colouring (optional)

Step 1: Place the toys in the tub, add enough water to cover all the toys. Add 2 - 3 drops of blue and or green food colouring if you wish. Freeze overnight until solid.

Step 2: Head outside to the garden or onto the balcony and turn out your ice age and then start to escavate the toys. You might need to place a towel down on the floor to collect the melting water/ice chips and stop it from slipping or place all your materials in a bigger tub.

SCIENCE OBSERVATIONS What's the best way to remove the toys? Smash them out? Melt them out? What happens when you sprinkle salt on the ice?

Variation!

You could also place small toys inside water balloons to make little egg shaped ice blocks.
