Year 6 Newsletter 3rd October 2025

A Note from the Principal

03/10/25

This week I have been reflecting on the strength of our wider community. On Tuesday, we welcomed parents to our Safeguarding session, an important step for those wishing to volunteer in classrooms. On Wednesday, our CAT assemblies introduced students to their charity partnerships for the year ahead, sparking enthusiasm for making a difference beyond school.

I was also delighted to lead a tour for families interested in our Foundation Stage. Meeting those considering entrusting us with their child’s first steps in education is always a privilege.

Moments like these remind me how much stronger we are when students, staff, and parents work together, united by our shared values and commitment to helping every child feel safe, curious, and kind as they learn and grow.

Have a great weekend and don’t forget next week is the last week of Term 1A!

Year 6 Sports Council - Applications Open!

We’re launching the Primary Year 6 Sports Council at Bangkok Patana School. “Sport” is defined broadly—alongside team games, it includes solo and lifestyle activities (e.g., swimming, running, climbing, dance, yoga) and strategic activities like chess that build focus, resilience and teamwork. The emphasis is on participation, creativity and student voice—not just performance.

Who we’re looking for: Enthusiastic Year 6 students who love PE and sport, work well in a team, and want to make a positive impact on our community (e.g., helping with Sports Week and Movement Monthly).

How to apply (student choice):

  • Option A: Record a short video (max 2 minutes) at school with a plain white background.
  • Option B: Submit a written/typed application (maximum one side of A4).

Please cover briefly:

  • Your interest in sport and being active

  • Ideas to make PE & Sport more fun and inclusive for everyone

  • Why you’d be a great member of the Sports Council

Deadline: Friday, 10 October 2025
Send to: Mr Chris Walsh — chwl@patana.ac.th

We’re looking for enthusiasm and creativity, not perfection!

Calling All Shoeboxes!

Next half term, Year 6 will be working on an exciting art project which requires shoe boxes. If you have any spare shoe boxes at home, we’d be very grateful if you could save them and drop them off at school over the coming weeks. Thank you for your support!

Tiger Spirit Day

In the Primary School, Tiger Spirit Day is our Term 1 annual whole school charity fundraising event. The money raised goes into our Primary Central Fund. Each year, the Central Fund focuses on one of the UN's sustainable development goals to support our wider community and promote the values of sustainability. This year, our focus is SDG:12 Responsible consumption and production. We look forward to working closely with our partner charities to provide more opportunities for circular economies both here at school and our surrounding region.

Wellbeing

Positive Behaviours – Positive Attitudes

As you walk around the school, you are almost certain to spot our Safe – Curious – Kind posters.

Many, if not all, of the behaviours and attitudes we want for our students can be explicitly taught.

Positive Behaviours – Positive Attitudes

Classes and year groups choose a small number of relevant targets roughly every half term.

The Year 6 Target for Term 1A is Being Safe: Transitions around school - Following school rules while moving around school and being on time to lessons.

Playground use before and after school

Students are not permitted to use any of the climbing or play equipment before 7:30 a.m.

There is no staff supervision in any play area after 2:30.

The accompanying adult is therefore responsible for the safe supervision of the child.

We encourage parents and family employees to take children straight home at the end of the school day.

Taking photos and videos of students on Campus

At Bangkok Patana School we welcome parents on to our campus.

As part of this agreement, all parents must agree to our Parents’ Safeguarding Code of Conduct.

This includes:

  • Never taking images in toilets, changing rooms or areas where privacy is expected.
  • Using judgement before taking and before sharing images of students.

During a regular school day, parents may only take images of their own child – unless they have sought and received permission from another family to include their child in a group photo.

Family employees with access to the campus must also abide by this rule.

Where and when can parents take photos and videos when on campus?

Smart Watches and Phones

Whilst we encourage our students to learn how to tell the time, smart watches offer additional online functions like that of a mobile phone.

Features such as gaming, internet browsing, and the ability to make and receive calls are potentially distracting in class and can pose a risk for safety and privacy. Within the Primary School, students are required to keep their smart watch safely stored in their bag during the school day. Smart watches can be taken out of bags once a child exits the school gates at 2:30pm or once their ECA has ended at 3:30pm or 4:30pm. Students are not allowed to take or send images while using the school bus.

Smart watches are expensive items. Please be aware that the school takes no responsibility for loss or damage of smart watches.

Thank you for your cooperation and support in maintaining a safe and positive learning environment for all our students.

Birthday Treats

Children may bring in a special treat to share with the class.

Please contact the class teacher to arrange a suitable time.

- Brownies, cupcakes, small donuts, and cake slices are easier for your child to give out.

· We do not give out drinks (e.g., bubble tea, sodas)

· Please reduce plastic packaging.

· We do not allow party bags or other gifts to be given out at school, either for birthdays, or other celebrations.

- Please agree a time with the teacher in advance.

- Parents can join in the celebrations.

We are a NUT FREE school. When ordering birthday treats, please ensure that there are no nuts or nut products (such as Nutella or peanut butter) used.

PE

Students should come to school in their PE kit on PE days. If they have swimming for the first lesson, they can wear their swim kit under their uniform. If they have swimming later in the day, we ask that they DO NOT wear their swim kit to school.

Please ensure that your child brings their uniform with them to get changed into after their PE lessons.

Blogs

Click on the image to visit the Year 6 blogs.

This is where you will find an overview of your child's learning along with their home learning tasks and any important messages from your child's class teacher.

Please check your child's class blog weekly to stay informed about their learning.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning.

 Events In The World

You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show.  Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.
