Year 5 Newsletter 4th October 2024

We are kind

The Year 5 students loved spending time with our Year 2 students as part of our Tiger Spirit Day celebrations this week.

                                                                      A note from the principal

It’s been a fantastic week in Primary, highlighted by one of our favourite days—Tiger Spirit! We celebrated with exciting assemblies and activities, and it was wonderful to see students, staff, and parents dressed up in their best tiger costumes.

Next week, we are all eagerly anticipating International Day, another whole-school celebration that truly captures the spirit of our community. Huge thanks to the PTG for all their hard work in supporting this! Don’t forget to join us for the Parade, Cultural Show, and Assembly on Friday.

We are also thrilled to be welcoming back the Kliptown Youth Program, a community-based educational organisation providing opportunities to people from disadvantaged areas of Soweto, South Africa. As a special treat, they will be offering a parent workshop on Monday at 8am in the Primary Hall, featuring gumboot dancing, singing, and drumming. You can sign up and find more information here. We hope to see you there!

Year 5 Poetry Festival

On Thursday 10th October, Year 5 will have their annual Poetry Festival, with all eight classes performing in front of our esteemed feedback panel. Parents are very welcome to attend, sitting upstairs in the theatre. The festival will begin at 1.10pm and will last around one hour. If you can’t make it, don’t worry - each performance will be recorded, and we will share these on our class blogs soon after the event.

The children are invited to wear non-uniform to enhance their performance. More details will follow shortly via email from class teachers with specifics about what your child should wear.

We look forward to seeing you there.

The PE Department is excited to announce the first interclass sports event of the year!

The Year 5 Swimming Gala will be held on Monday, 7th October, from 7.40 am to 9.45 am. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks. The event will take place at the 50m pool, and we warmly encourage parents to come and support their children.

As a reminder, if your child is unable to participate in a swimming lesson due to illness or other reasons, please contact the PE teacher directly, rather than the class teacher or Leaders of Learning.

If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the PE Department

Parent Volunteers

We are ready and happy to welcome parent volunteers into Year 5.

If you would like to join us, please fill out this form stating your availability and the activities you would be interested in supporting.

We are particularly keen to have some help with hearing independent readers.

Please note, it is possible that you will not be working with your child’s class.

As part of our Student Safeguarding, we require any parent who may be in direct and regular contact with students to complete a three-step process before offering their time.

  • Attend a short presentation about in-school Safeguarding
  • Sign the Parent Code of Conduct (updated annually)
  • Sign a Self-Disclosure form confirming that you have never been subject to any allegation or investigation with reference to children or young people.

Miss Carol Battram will be hosting a Primary Parent Workshop on Safeguarding for Parent Volunteers on Tuesday 1st October .

A note from Mr. Thornback, Year 6 Year Group Leader

You will have received an email regarding the Masters research of Mr Todd Thornback (Teacher in Y6).

Here is a reminder of the Google Form if you and your child wish to be participants https://forms.gle/JwYPoEVMXuvYm7m28.

A message from Mr Bart about our Science Learning

To make the children’s Science learning more engaging and meaningful we ask for your kind assistance. Could you send any old/empty glass jars (small to medium size, with or without lids) to school with your child to assist us with growing some tropical plants? Please ensure the jars are clean inside and not broken.

Thank you so much for your help. We appreciate your kindness and global citizenship.

Well-being

Safe, curious, kind

Parents may have seen these new posters around the Primary school. We recently shared the attitudes and behaviours that we want to help every student to learn and develop as they move through our school.

These attitudes and behaviours are grouped under our three key values; Safe, Curious and Kind.

We want these positive words, thoughts and actions to support and strengthen your child’s holistic development as they move through Primary and into young adulthood. Please help us champion these three key values by referencing our matrix of positive behaviours and attitudes in conversations with your child. The matrix is also available in Thai.

Student Wellbeing Survey (PASS)

As part of our student welfare provision, our Y4-6 students will take part in a survey about their attitudes to school and learning.

You will also receive a letter giving more information about the PASS survey (Pupil Attitudes to Self and School) and how it helps us to support student learning and wellbeing.

Despite the acronym PASS, this is not a test! No preparation is required, and we want our students to enjoy the process.

Physical development and PE kit

A number of our students will enter puberty whilst in Primary school.

Every child will pass through puberty at a different time, and at a different rate.

Some children may feel more comfortable wearing a lightweight sports bra or crop top under their PE kit.

We are a NUT FREE school. When ordering birthday treats, please ensure that there are no nuts or nut products (such as Nutella or peanut butter) used.

  • Individual treats can be brought into school with your child in the morning.
  • Please agree a time with the teacher in advance.
  • Parents can join in the celebrations.

The Rainforest

PE

Students should come to school in their PE kit on PE days. If they have swimming for the first lesson, they can wear their swim kit under their uniform. If they have swimming later in the day, we ask that they DO NOT wear their swim kit to school.

Please ensure that your child brings their uniform with them to get changed into after their PE lessons.

Blogs

As part of our student welfare provision, our Y4-6 students will take part in a survey about their attitudes to school and learning.

You will also receive a letter giving more information about the PASS survey (Pupil Attitudes to Self and School) and how it helps us to support student learning and wellbeing.

This is where you will find an overview of your child's learning along with their home learning tasks and any important messages from your child's class teacher.

Please check your child's class blog weekly to stay informed about their learning.

Please encourage your child to complete their home learning.

 Events In The World

You can keep up to date with current events around the world by watching Newsround, an age appropriate news show.  Being aware of current events will help your child to make connections with a range of themes when reading in class, and it is an ideal opportunity for you to model discussing your opinions and using experiences to draw connections between events and people.
