Business Really Does Matter

Interested in learning how to start the perfect business? Well, you are reading the perfect article! In Year 4, the students have been learning about ‘Business Matters’ and now their brains are bursting with business knowledge. Here Shruti (4C), Advi (4M), Keira (4B) and Janice (4B) tell us more about this inspiring unit of learning.

To start our fabulous adventure into business, we had to ponder what jobs we wanted to apply for; from Company Directors to Production Managers, the options were vast and we all had lots to think about.

It all began with our interviews. We were all dressed smartly and classrooms became offices. Some students were nervous while others were excited about the whole experience. After the interviews everyone was eager to know their companies and their jobs.

Finally the time came and everybody was so excited and pleased about their teams and positions. After these were announced a few parents came into school to talk about their role within business, for example, being a Marketing Manager or CEO. Every class was bustling with eager students and we learnt plenty of business tips that would help us in the future.

With this knowledge, we headed to Year 6, Year 5, Year 3 and Year 2 to collect market research. We had to figure out what they would happily buy and therefore what we needed to create. From the results, a number of different products were thought about, for example, some companies chose stress balls, others slime.

Next, we made our prototypes and created another questionnaire. We presented our prototypes to the same year groups and asked them how we could improve our products further. With our market research completed we had to make our shopping list. We had a budget of 1000 baht which proved tricky for some companies as they nearly went over budget.

Now was the time everyone was waiting for the…MAKING!!! For this bit, teamwork was really important and also staying calm and not panicking. All of us were feeling very grown up and we couldn’t wait for the expo.

Finally, the great day had arrived! The Year 4 Expo! This was it. All our hard work would hopefully pay off in the next 2 HOURS! As we stood nervously in the Conference Centre, we knew that in just a few moments the ribbon would be cut and stalls would be bursting with people wanting to buy our things.

The atmosphere was electric! Here many students and teachers share their thoughts of the day:

“This has been a tremendous unit of learning. I have thoroughly enjoyed myself!” said Ms Laird

“I bought slime and I like it very much because it’s chillaxing!” Florencia, 6O

“Ooh, so squishy and soft! These stress balls make me feel much better!” Trinity’s Mum

There was a lot of chatter and nervous looks as stalls were closed and money was counted. Most companies sold out and the majority made a profit - it was such a successful day.

‘Business Matters’ has been one of the most exciting units of learning in Year 4. We have all learnt so much and developed our future business brains!
