The Osmo arrived from the U.S. yesterday only 5 days after ordering it! I had to pay B1200 for customs duty so the total came to approximately $120 with shipping. The apps are free and the boys were quickly into playing with the standard games (Words & Tangram) with minimal guidance. They started to argue and who's turn it was quite quickly - a good sign of engagement in the Taylor clan. We have not explored the building app Newton, or the drawing Masterpiece app yet, I'll update with that later on....

The ongoing debate regarding the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model in schools warrants deeper analysis to help educators and institutions understand this provisioning model and its potential benefits and pitfalls for learning.

This discussion paper sets out to investigate the myths and understand which questions should be addressed when considering allowing students to bring their own devices, and which option might be best suited to a school or system’s culture. It is intended to stimulate discussion around what constitutes best practice 1-to-1 learning.

• For teachers, 'Manage Set Tasks' and 'Your Tasks' have been conflated into a single 'Tasks' dropdown in the black navigation bar, and 'Markbook' has been added.
• Teachers can now mark 'online' tasks without having to wait for students to submit work through Firefly.

• We now use the correct site ID to populate email footers. This means that schools with multiple sites will no longer see the name of the wrong site.
• Read-only .pps files no longer throw an error when attempting to live edit.
• Columnist now displays attendance data nicely on a small screen.
• The Melody navigation menu now works as expected on Microsoft Surface.
• Galleries now load faster, which will be particularly beneficial on homepages where multiple galleries exist on a single page.
• Google Docs are now reliably scrollable on iPad.
• Profile pictures now display reliably when the school is using Guid matching for cloud.

Between studying, homework and extracurricular activities, going back to school may make kids feel like they have the weight of the world on their shoulders. And sometimes, they literally do. After you pile a lunch, school supplies, binders and textbooks — which typically weigh 3.5 lbs each — into your child’s backpack, the load he or she is lugging around could be huge … and potentially dangerous. According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, at least 14,000 children are treated for backpack-related injuries every year.

A leading independent school is making dozens of its courses available free online, so lessons can be downloaded by pupils or teachers at other schools.

The ground-breaking initiative by Stephen Perse Foundation school in Cambridge will make A-level, IB and GCSE courses available online.

Developing the tech curriculum challenged me to teach programming or at least computational thinking at each elementary grade level. Our school is mid-pivot in technology -- we're in our second year of a middle school 1:2 iPad program, our first year of having a cart of iPads available for elementary, and our last year of two PC labs for the students to use (next year we'll have only one lab). Knowing this, I wanted to design a program that mostly used tablet-based tools.

There is no denying that cyberbullying is a real problem that we are facing in our our schools, our communities and our homes. Tragic accounts of teens who have been tormented through social media, emails, texts or instant messages are only a click away and will produce pages of results.

It is a difficult situation that we all must educate ourselves about.

The evolving role of the teacher as facilitator, and hands-on learning experiences that give students agency over their own education are two major trends already taking root in many schools and classrooms, according to the 2014 NMC Horizon K-12 Horizon report.

Within three to five years, the authors expect to see increasing focus on open education resources, as well as more experimentation with blended learning models that combine time on the computer with face-to-face instruction. In the longer term, the authors see intuitive technologies that interpret human gestures and motions as increasingly important. And, as educators rethink how to meet students’ needs the way school currently works might have to change — everything from the schedule to the space, as well as models of teaching and learning.

Since its release a few years ago, Aurasma gained so much in popularity and several teachers have already embraced it within their classrooms. For those of you who are not yet familiar with how Aurasma works and how to use in it in your class, the video tutorials below will help you out.

Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy. Obviously, depending on the grade level you teach, your students will have different abilities in each of the four areas, so your expectations and your teaching approach may differ quite noticeably from your colleagues. But the nagging question still remains for many teachers – what exactly is digital literacy?

Because it is a relatively new term, many teachers are able to define it as it pertains to their specific classroom. A quick Google search yields me the very vague definition of: the ability to effectively and critically navigate, evaluate and create information using a range of digital technologies. It requires one “to recognize and use that power, to manipulate and transform digital media, to distribute pervasively, and to easily adapt them to new forms”. Being that vague almost requires you to define it specifically for each class you work with.

Classroom is Google’s latest student-centered education product and is scheduled to be released this coming fall. After watching the Classroom promotional video and reading about its features and capabilities, I immediately requested an invite to try it out. Millions of other instructional technology specialists, educators, and GAFE school administrators likely did the same. To say there’s a buzz of excitement among educational technology enthusiasts and GAFE fans in particular surrounding Classroom is an understatement. There’s also quite a bit of speculation about the “game-changing” impact Classroom could have not only on GAFE schools, but on education in general.

Sharing Ownership of Files in Google Drive

iPad Bingo chart is an activity created by Allanah King to help teachers enhance their workflow with iPad. At the heart of iPad Bingo is a collaborative learning and sharing experience and though Allanah initially designed this chart to be used with teachers learning about the basics of iPad use, I would suggest that teachers use it with their students in the start of the school year to assess students knowledge of basic iPad tasks. To do this you can apply the procedure Allanah used :
